Mogul Skiing: Three OWI Athletes Make World Championship Moguls Final

Date: 31/01/03

Australia qualified three skiers for the final of the moguls at the World Freestyle Championships in Deer Valley, Utah, early this morning.

Four time Olympian Adrian Costa produced an impeccable run down the 2002 Salt Lake Games course to finish in eighth place on 24.34 points, his best performance for the season.

Rookie Olympic Winter Institute team-mate Michael Robertson was just three places behind on 23.86 points, a brilliant performance for a 20-year-old with only six World Cup appearances under his belt.

Leading the 16-man qualifying group was American Travis Cabral on 26.77 points.

In the women’s, 24-year-old Jane Sexton was the only Australian to make it through to the final, finishing in 16th place on 21.69 points.

Maria Despas, a silver medallist at this event two years ago, missed the final by one place, finishing in 17th position on 21.62.

Manuela Berchtold was back in 21st place after a mistake at the bottom of the course destroyed what was shaping as one of her best runs of the season.

The leading women's qualifier was defending world champion and Salt Lake gold medallist Kari Traa of Norway.

The final will take place on Saturday morning Australian time.
