Jenny Owens Update

Things didn’t go quite my way this time but I have to blame that on being fatigued. I’m completely exhausted after the six events that I’ve been in over the past 3-4 weeks.

I had a few mistakes in qualifying. It had snowed a foot over night so the course was very soft and left no room for error, so ended up placing 12th in the qualifying.

I was out of the starts as fast as usual but air swung with my pole when I went to push which was unfortunate. I placed 3rd in my head so didn’t make it through to the semi finals so it was a short day! I didn’t move up in the rankings so stayed at 12th. I’m still ranked 4th in the overall which is good to hold onto!

My shins are once again giving me a lot of trouble but thankful my knees have been fine in the last few racers. I’ve be diagnosed with anterior compartment syndrome so to stop this in the future, I will get an operated at the end of the season. It’s only a minor surgery where they make a small incision in the tissue so that the muscles can expand the pressure is released. It is only a 4 week recovery so very minor...

I’m in desperate need of some days off so am heading down to Salt Lake tomorrow to have 2 full rest days to recover. I’ll try and find a pool and a bike to do some recovery and also a hotel with a bath to have some icy cold baths in to help recover quicker. After the next comp, which is the Jeep King of the Mountain, I have a week off before the next World Cup in Spain so I’ll find a place somewhere to relax and do some more recovering fitness etc. Any suggestions John!?!?

We had the Tignes Airwaves Super Cross on the 9th (of January), no days off then Les Contamines World Cup on the 12th, with only one day off to travel there, Flaine World Cup, then 2 days after that Kreischberg, then two days in between the X Games in Aspen and then two days to here. Most of those days in between I was travelling and when you have to organise all your own flights, car hire, accommodation, do fitness, prepare the skis each day which can take 4 hours, do the coaches meetings etc all by yourself, it is a lot more than anyone else does because most teams have staff for this. It is very stressful and very tiring. By the time you usually get to the event, you're already worn out so it's hard to rise about that all the time. I figure if I can do all this on my own and still end up on the podium from time to time, imagine what I can do when I have a proper program!

Hope everyone is well and will let you know how my recovery goes!

Jen
