Dale Begg-Smith is back on the top of the World Cup mogul skiing rankings after winning silver in Lake Placid, New York.
Begg-Smith collected the 19th podium result of his career in finishing behind Canadian skier Warren Tanner, lifting his points for the season to 120, ten clear of Tanner.
The 23-year-old Olympic champion was more than a second faster than his nearest opponent in the final and also produced strong air scores to post a points score of 25.49, just short of the 25.55 points of the Canadian.
Patrick Dineen of the US took the bronze on 25.22 points.
Begg-Smith’s AIS/Olympic Winter Institute team-mate Ramone Cooper was also in great form, skiing to a personal best result of eighth place, ten spots higher than his previous best.
OWI Head Moguls coach Steve Desovich was pleased with Begg-Smith’s performance, but confident that there are even better things to come.
“Dale skied amazingly fast,” Desovich said.
“His turns in the final were a little messy but that was because he was going so fast. He was over a second quicker than the next fastest guy, and there’s not one other person in the field who could have hung on to it.”
“Dale has quickly established himself as the fastest skier on the tour, and that’s good.”
“His air in the final was also excellent.”
“We’ve only had four runs for the season, and we’ve just come off a 35 day break, so at the moment he’s just trying to find his range with everything. As the season wears on he’ll be able to get everything dialled in and put down some really vintage runs again. Hopefully, that’s not far off.”
A second moguls event will be held in Lake Placid on Sunday night, AEDT.
