Alisa
Camplin has retained her place as the world’s number one
aerial skier despite crashing out in the World Cup in
Lake Placid, New York.
Flying Kangaroos team-mate Lydia Ierodiaconou collected
the bronze medal after leading the qualification round
with her first 100 points plus jump.
Chinese duo Jiao Wang and Nina Li took the gold and
silver medals.
In a day of high winds and difficult snow conditions,
Camplin could not judge her speed correctly on the
in-run, going into her qualification jump too fast,
getting too much height and then somersaulting on
landing.
She finished in 21st place, but sits on 309 points at
the top of the World Cup table, 19 clear of Ierodiaconou
on 279, with Wang moving into third place on 214 points.
Ierodiaconou produced a brilliant opening triple
twisting double somersault to score a personal best
100.28 points, leading the field by 10 points.
But in her second effort she also had trouble with the
wind, jumping too big and back-slapping on landing.
“I had a great opportunity to win today but couldn’t
capitalise on it,” Ierodiaconou said.
“How can I not win when I lead by ten points?”
“But conditions were really difficult. I had a really
strong tail wind on the second jump. I knew I was too
high, and stretched as much as I could to slow it down,
but it wasn’t enough.”
“Still, I learnt a lot today, and I’m really happy I
could get over one hundred points on my full double full
which is the jump that I’ve been having trouble with.”
“I’m looking forward to Sunday’s competition.”
Olympic Winter Institute team-member Liz Gardner
finished in tenth place, with Lainie Cole in 19th. Trudy
McIntosh did not start, the conditions adjudged too
difficult for the novice competitor.
The Olympic Winter Institute moguls team will compete on
Sunday morning, AEST, with another aerials World Cup
scheduled for Monday morning.
