Camplin on top of world after victory in Finland

Flying Kangaroos 1-2 on standings

Alisa Camplin has moved to the top of the aerials skiing World Cup title race with a comprehensive victory in Ruka, Finland, overnight.

Olympic Winter Institute team-mate Lydia Ierodiaconou, who led the standings going into the event, crashed out in qualifying, but remains second on the World Cup points table in an Australian quinella.

Third member of the Australian Flying Kangaroos team, Liz Gardner, finished in fourth place in a career best performance.

Camplin set up the victory in the first round, scoring 100.46 points to lead the competition by a massive 14.31 points from Chinese skier Nina Li, with United States aerialist Kate Reed in third.

Li produced the best jump of the competition in the second round, scoring 100.64, but Camplin was able to wind back the degree of difficulty on her second round jump to a double twisting double somersault and still win by a comfortable five points.

The final scores were Camplin on 191.65 points, Li on 186.79, Reed on 159.03 and Gardner on 156.74.

The standings after the third round of the World Cup are Camplin on 198 points, Ierodiaconou on 174 and Nannan Xu of China, on 160.

The World Cup now takes another mid season break before resuming in Mont Tremblant, Canada, on January 11.

Alisa Camplin quotes:

"The wind was very strong and very gusty, and there was a possibility it was going to be a one-jump competition."

"Most of the girls were a bit scared and were holding back so I decided it was a chance to use my experience, do a big jump and hurt them on DD (degree of difficulty)."

"It’s really exciting because it wasn’t easy out there. It was really taxing mentally, and I think most of the other were surprised when I did the triple and landed it so well – they were all congratulating me."

On Lydia:

"Lyd landed sidewards at the end of training and took a big hit, and I think she ripped her groin muscle, but she decided to jump anyway, which was so brave."

"She really went for it and tried a full double full (triple twisting double somersault) but overshot and crashed, but she’s OK."
