Australian Alpine Ski Championships
start today

This week in Thredbo 110 athletes from nine nations will compete in the Australian Alpine Ski Championships.

Athletes from Australia, France, the USA, Luxemburg, Monaco, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will compete in four days of alpine ski racing.

National Alpine Committee chairman of selectors Lachlan Clark said that the Australian Alpine Ski Championships were a highlight in the ski-racing calendar.

“Often Australians overlook skiing as a sport at which we excel, but we currently have a couple of male athletes in the top 50 skiers in the world,” he said.

“For athletes, this years national championships are another step toward representing Australia at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

“The Australian Champs are an exciting race as it attracts both Australian and international athletes,” Clark said. “The top ranked racers, both male and female going into the race are Australian, followed by athletes from France, the US and the Czech Republic.

“The conditions are fantastic with some of the best snow that we have had in years.

The Australian Alpine Ski Championships will run from Tuesday 14 August to Friday 17 August. Giant slalom events will be held the first two days of competition and two days of slalom events will be held on Thursday and Friday.

Cross Country

Esther Bottomley and Paul Murray have won the 2007 Australian Sprint Championships held at Falls Creek. The 1km freestyle events were part of the 2007 FIS Australia - New Zealand Continental Cup series. The rain falling steadily throughout the event made for unpleasant conditions for competitors and spectators, however the racing was exciting with some close finishes in the men's side of the field.

Bottomley won the women's time trial, with KT Calder in second just 0.02 of a second ahead of junior Chloe McConville in third. One second separated 4th from 8th place. Aimee Watson from 8th place managed to join the fastest three qualifiers in the A-Final. Bottomley lead right from the start, while Calder was slow off the blocks and dropped back to third. Bottomley broke away over the top of the course, with McConville also dropping Calder. Calder took back time in the second half of the race, but it was wasn't enough. The final placings Bottomley, McConville, Calder, Watson. No women's B-final was held due to reluctance of athletes to hang around in the rain getting cold.

Murray won the qualifying time trial ahead of Ben Sim, with Nick Grimmer and van der Ploeg brothers Mark and Neil close behind. International competitors Gaber Lah from Slovenia and Ron Carmichael from Great Britain were knocked out in the quarter finals, together with 7th ranked Chris Darlington who was knocked out by 10th ranked Leon Spiller. Former Kangaroo Hoppet winners Sim and Ben Derrick were knocked out in the semi-finals, leaving Mark and Neil Van Der Ploeg, Murray, and Spiller in the final. Murray broke the field up over the top of the course, but Neil Van Der Ploeg closed back to within 5m with 300m to go. Unfortunately Neil Van Der Ploeg slipped and fell on the final corner into the finish straight, giving Murray the win. Mark overtook brother Neil to take second place, but Neil was up quick enough to hold onto third place ahead of Spiller. Derrick won the B-Final in a photo-finish over Sim.

In the U16 sprint events Phillip Bellingham won the junior men's final comfortably ahead of Robert Jones and Alasdair Tutt, while Anna Trnka won the junior women's final ahead of Aislinn Kildea and Laura Bull. The U12 boy's final was won by Lachlan Porter.

Aerial Skiing Training Update

Summer training is off to a flying start for the OWI Aerial Ski Team who are currently based in Park City, Utah. Guided by coaches Todd Ossian and Ryan Snow, water ramping is underway as the team continuously progresses to bigger and more exciting tricks.

As Jacqui Cooper builds her way up to the triple kicker and masters her legendary triple twisting triple somersaults, she’s ready to dominate at coming water ramping events in Quebec and Switzerland.

Newly-married Lydia Lassila (Ierodiaconou) has made a powerful return after taking a year off to recover from her knee reconstruction. Back with the same drive and determination, Lydia is impressing the crowd by performing exceptional doubles with her well-known flair.

Liz Gardner has also made a dynamic start to the summer, striking each jump with the goal of perfection.

David Morris is making great changes and conquering new tricks, eager to hit the triple kicker before the winter season begins. Also recovering from a knee reconstruction is Denita Mudge, thrilled to be back in training and determined to pick up where she left off.

The summer promises great things to come as the team prepares for a fruitful competition season. Along with the training, it never hurts to have a close group of encouraging coaches and team members, a perfect gym, and fantastic weather for basking in the sun. (Story thanks to Denita Mudge).

Minor Injuries Sideline OWI Halfpipe Duo

Holly Crawford and Hannah Trigger, the two members of the OWI halfpipe team, are both temporarily out of action through injury.

Neither injuries are as significant as first thought , however, and both athletes are likely to be ready to resume competition when the team travels to New Zealand for the first World Cup of the season in Cardrona on September 1.

Crawford injured her right shoulder in trampoline training - not the one she had reconstructed some years back - while Trigger's ankle sprain was also incurred on the trampoline.

Crawford goes to the opening event of the season as runner up in the 2007 World Cup, and will be looking to get her year off to a great start.

Trigger will also be keen to have a full year on the World Cup circuit, after making her debut last season with four events.

Snowboard TID

Two Snowboard Talent Identification camps have recently been completed with the third, a halfpipe camp, scheduled for September. The first two camps, boardercross at Mt Hotham and a PGS at Mt Buller were held last week with 25 athletes attending each. Athletes in attendance ranged from 13 to 24 years old and covered a varying range of abilities. From all reports the camps have been a great success with some of the best coaching being made available and great terrain provided by the resorts.

From each of these camps it is hoped to select eight athletes to attend a 6 week intense training camp during the northern hemisphere winter. Further announcements regarding the camp and athletes selected to join the Snowboard Sub-development team will be made shortly.

Thanks to all the coaches who made the time to participate in these camps and to the resorts Mt Buller and Mt Hotham who provided terrain for training and assisted with the logistics of the camps.

AIS Mirco Tech Pipe Challenge

Perisher recently hosted a unique snowboard event organized by the Australian Institute of Sport in conjunction with Catapult Innovations, Griffith University’s School of Engineering and the Olympic Winter Institute. The halfpipe event which invited some of Australia’s top riders to compete was used to test new micro-technology designed to assist the judging process.
