2007 Ski and Snowboard Awards

Begg-Smith tops Ski and Snowboard awards

Freestyle skiers Dale Begg-Smith and Jacqui Cooper have taken out the major Ski and Snowboard awards for the 2006/07 season.

Begg-Smith has been named snowsports athlete of the year for the third consecutive time, while Cooper has received the Outstanding Achievement of the Year award.

Coach of the year is the man who guided Begg-Smith to his second straight World Cup title, Steve Desovich.

The junior snowsports athlete of the year is snowboard cross rider Alex Pullin.

The awards were presented late last week at a Ski and Snowboard Australia team reception.

Among the presenters were Chairman of the Australian Sports Commission Peter Bartels and Chairman of the Olympic Winter Institute Geoff Henke.

The individual discipline awards were:

Alpine: Demian Franzen
Cross country: Ben Sim
Freestyle: Dale Begg-Smith
Snowboard: Holly Crawford

Junior snowsports awards in each individual discipline were:

Alpine: Katya Crema
Cross country: Aimee Watson
Freestyle: Ramone Cooper
Snowboard: Alex Pullin

Begg-Smith's 2006/07 season was certainly no let-down following his Torino Olympic medal success.

The 21-year old collected six World Cup victories on his way to his second straight World Cup title, then added the world championship dual moguls crown and a single moguls silver medal to his trophy cabinet.

In all, Dale collected seven victories and two other podiums from the 12 events he contested during the season, a remarkable record of consistency.

Cooper was also magnificent, becoming the most successful woman in aerial skiing history, winning an unprecedented fourth World Cup title, establishing a new record of 18 World Cup individual victories and breaking her own world record points score. She added a bronze medal in the world championships, eight years after winning her first world crown.

Membership

Important Membership Information

Ski & Snowboard Australia will be holding a Special General Meeting on the 4th of June with a view to adopt a new constitution. SSA has extended the 2006/7 membership year to the 4th of June to accommodate this.

The extension of the membership year combined with the proposed new constitution has implications for the 2007/8 membership year. As a result membership for 2007/8 will not be available until after the SGM.

SSA will advise all members as to the membership and registration process for 2007/8 in the near future.

Insurance

SSA has been in lengthy negotiations on behalf of all clubs and associations, to seek suitable renewal terms for Public Liability, Professional Indemnity, Personal accident and Directors & Officers cover.

We are delighted to offer renewal terms for clubs, camps and associations for 2007/2008, and confirm that the relevant premiums remain the same as the previous two insurance periods.
It is vital that all clubs/associations that have previously enjoyed cover under the master policy continue to support this initiative. The Sports cover policy is the only policy available that adequately meets the specific needs of the sport including cover for race clubs and programs overseas. Without these unique aspects of the policy our sport is greatly restricted. Non-competition clubs and associations can enjoy the benefit of these reduced premium levels, due in large part to the high level of support this policy has received from the wider skiing community.

Previously insured clubs/organisations have received renewal notices in the mail. By following the link below you can download an application form for the 2007/2008 insurance cover which includes Directors and Officers Insurance and an option for personal accident cover for your members and professional indemnity cover for coaches.
