Crawford still number one as two more Australians make the podium
Two more Australian winter sports athletes have won World Cup medals
during the weekend, while Holly Crawford has retained her position as
the number one World Cup snowboard halfpipe rider.
Crawford's halfpipe team-mate Andrew Burton collected bronze, the
first World Cup medal of his career, and former mogul skier Davina
Williams won silver in her very first World Cup outing in the
relatively new sport of ski halfpipe.
Competing in the Korean resort of Sungwoo, against a field that was
reduced in size due to rival pro events in Japan and the United
States, Burton qualified in first place with a score of 44.4 points

Crawford takes first victory and moves to world number one
Holly Crawford has won her first World Cup event and marched to the
top of the World Cup standings with a strong performance in Furano,
Japan.
Crawford qualified in first place with a best score of 42.4 points,
1.1 points ahead of Paulina Ligocka of Poland, the 2007 World
Championships bronze medallist.
She did not quite reproduce that form in the final, riding to a best
score of 39.6 points, but that was more than enough to take the gold
and relegate 2007 World Championships silver medallist Soko Yamaoka
to second place. More

Alpine News
Franzen top twenty in world championships slalom
Demian Franzen has produced the best Australian result at the World
Alpine Skiing championships in Are, Sweden, finishing in 19th place
in the slalom.
Franzen recorded a two run time of two minutes 7.82 seconds, 10.49
seconds behind the winning time of Austrian Mario Matt who took the
gold with 1:57.33.
Fellow Ski and Snowboard Australia team-mates Bryce and Hugh Stevens
both failed to finish the first run, which also accounted for 34 of
the 74 competitors, including World Cup slalom leader Jens Byggmark
of Sweden and overall World Cup leader Aksel Kund Svindal of Norway.
In earlier events at the championships, Hugh Stevens finished in
49th place in the giant slalom and Will Clifford was the best of the
Aussies in the super G, placing 56th.
Mens Alpine Development Update
After returning from Are the team made the long haul drive to
Verbier for the Swiss National Junior Championships. Arriving at 2am
in Verbier was not made worthwhile when the race was canceled due to
heavy snow. This break however did work well as it allowed everyone
to rest.
The race program was adjusted for the following day and two SG's
were scheduled. Fetterplace used his experience at Are to the
maximum as he skied aggressively and fast. Brenton skied into 5th
position from 46th start position. This was a great result and is a
good reward for Brenton's efforts in training. In the second race
that day Brenton skied well again, skiing into 16th position from
46th start position. Not being as clean as his first run cost him
some time
