Ski & Snowboard Australia E-News

The majority of Australian resorts are experiencing challenging conditions this season, as cold but dry weather persists in the Alpine areas with less than average natural snowfall. Fortunately the capacity for resorts to make snow has improved significantly over the years, and the majority of scheduled events remain on target. Unfortunately there have been some changes and cancellations.

This edition of the SSA e-news provides the latest information in regards to event changes.

ALPINE

The National Ski Team has had very good training at both Thredbo and Perisher Blue this domestic season. The snow making system at both resorts has provided ideal snow conditions for our training needs.

This is also the first season of a significantly changed National Team structure. The National Development Program has had a successful domestic season and has enjoyed the integration with the World Cup athlete’s Jono Brauer and Craig Branch.

The domestic race season is about to start with Nationals beginning next week in Thredbo. After the Nationals Craig Branch and Jono Brauer head to New Zealand for training with the Norwegian National Team and the Swedish National Team.

Unfortunately the ANC at Mt Hotham have been relocated to New Zealand. This means some of the team will travel to NZ to compete against the kiwis.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Australian racing season is in full swing, with races on every weekend in NSW and Victoria. With several of Australia's World Cup athletes taking a step back from racing this winter for various reasons some of the younger athletes are taking the opportunity to show their credentials.

The biggest improver has been 18-year-old Neil van der Ploeg from Mt Beauty, who won the Victorian Sprint Championships, and dead-heated with his older brother Mark for second place in the Australian Sprint Championships behind French skier Geoffroy Pais. NSW Institute of Sport junior Aimee Watson has also been in good form, finishing second in both the Australian 15km and 10km Championship events behind Torino Winter Olympian Esther Bottomley.
