Ski & Snowboard Australia E-News
Welcome to the 67th edition of the Ski &
Snowboard Australia E-News.
This edition of the E-news marks the start of the 2006 Southern
Winter training season, and already athletes across all disciplines
at all major resorts are taking to the snow in preparation for the
competition season ahead.
The 2006 season is the beginning of a new four year Olympic cycle,
and with several newly structured programs and exciting development
initiatives we are firmly setting our sights on Vancouver 2010 and
beyond.
As you would be aware from earlier communications, the 2006 Ski &
Snowboard Awards were postponed in April this year. We are
delighted to announce the official results, as adjudicated by the
SSA Awards judging panel, in this edition of the E-news.
This edition also includes the latest discipline news, reports from
the FIS Congress, an update on the SSA Governance Review and much
more.

SSA Governance Review Planning Forum
As you will be aware, at the request of the Australian Sports
Commission, SSA has recently undergone a Governance Review by Ms
Kate Costello. The Board of SSA welcomed the Review and the broad
thrust of its recommendations and is currently preparing a formal
response.
A component of the recommendations coming out of the Review is the
scheduling of a Planning Forum to discuss SSO sporting and other
operational activities that may be impacted by a unitary structure
for your sport. Importantly, the Forum is not intended to re-open
strategic issues settled in the Review process.
Key stakeholders including Disciplines, Resorts, and the SSO’s, have
been asked to nominate representatives to attend the forum which
will be held in Sydney on 25th July.
We look forward to bringing you the outcomes of this important
meeting in later editions of the SSA e-news.

gone into restructuring and recasting the National Alpine program
for the next four year cycle.

CROSS COUNTRY
The
National XC Team has just finished up a physiological testing camp
at the AIS in Canberra. Along with most of the World Cup and
Continental Cup team members, a handful of new junior skiers were
put through the tests for the first time, with very promising
results. 20-year Ben Sim from Cooma in NSW broke the record (his
own) on the VO2 Max test, lasting 35 minutes ski running on the
treadmill. This was 30 seconds better than his previous best, and 1
minute further than the long time record that was held by Australian
triple winter Olympian Anthony Evans until Sim broke it in 2004.
Amongst the junior athletes 17 year old Georgia Merritt from Ivanhoe
in Victoria produced one of the best ever tests for a junior female
on the treadmill, lasting 25 1/2 minutes, while 16-year Callum
Watson from Cooma in NSW outlasted several of the senior men with a
very impressive 31 minutes.
The first on-snow training camp is due to start at Falls Creek in
the first week of July. Malin Redlig from Sweden has joined the
National XC Team as Assistant Coach for the winter, courtesy of a
scholarship with the Swedish Government. Redlig will be based at
Falls Creek all winter, working with athletes on-snow together with
National Team Coach Finn Marsland.
