Ski & Snowboard Australia E-News Edition 62

I trust you enjoyed the Olympic Editions of the SSA E-News.

Ski & Snowboard Australia is delighted with the performance of our athletes in Torino.

If the performance of SSA in Torino was combined with that of Summer NF’s at the Athens Games, based on Gold Medals SSA would rank equal 3rd behind only Swimming and Cycling. Only 4 other National Federations achieved Gold Medal outcomes in Athens placing SSA in elite company as one of only 7 NF’s to win Gold in the most recent Olympic games, and one of only 5 of which achieved multi medal outcomes.

SSA achieved 5 top 8 results in Torino. These results rank in the top 9 all time best results for Australian snowsport athletes at a Winter Olympic Games.

These outstanding performances are as a result of careful planning, and world class program operation by SSA and our Institute partners OWI, NSWIS and VIS. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Olympic Committee for their ongoing support and to congratulate the Seven Network on their Olympic telecast.

SSA entered the Torino Olympic Games with 25 athletes, 9 of whom had achieved World Cup medal results in the past two seasons. This compares with 5 athletes achieving medal results leading into Salt Lake City. Our programs have produced 54 World Cup medal results in the past four years compared to 35 in the quad leading up to Salt Lake City.

Significantly, the World Cup podium performances in the lead up to Torino came from four different disciplines with three of these producing Gold Medal results!

The challenge for SSA is to maintain the momentum and to achieving even greater success in Vancouver 2010.

As stakeholders you will be called upon at some point to support our athletes as we begin the long road to Vancouver.

There is no doubt that the SSA needs corporate support to take our programs in all disciplines to the next level and to achieve sustained high performance success. SSA has never been better placed to partner organisations looking for a “whole of sport approach” to sponsorship, and can deliver a unique and exiting range of benefits. I strongly encourage your support whatever form that may take, and look forward to a fantastic year ahead as we celebrate Torino and develop our sport program structure for a successful Vancouver Olympics and beyond.

Regards
Michael Kennedy
