RE Review of the Governance of Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA)

Many of you would be aware that in June 2005 the Australian Sports Commission decided to sponsor an independent review of SSA with the primary objective that the sport of skiing and snowboarding in Australia is governed in accordance with best practice principles and practices. The consultant engaged to undertake the review was Ms Kate Costello. I take this opportunity to thank Ms Costello publicly for her critically important contribution to our sport.

The SSA Board received Ms Costello's presentation and comprehensive report at a Board meeting on Wednesday 1st February. The Board, after an initial discussion of the report, is extremely supportive of the vast majority of the 38 recommendations that flow from the review.

Further, the SSA Board has circulated the full report (and executive summary) to state and territory associations as well as posting both versions of the report on the website to ensure that all members and interested parties have the opportunity to participate in the next steps.

Ms Costello has also agreed to hold briefing sessions in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra later this month to advocate implementation of the report recommendations and to elicit responses.

You will see from the report that the recommendations are based on simplifying the structure of governance of our sport with the key objective of building valuable and effective working relationships among the key stakeholders of SSA based on harmony and trust. These are welcomed initiatives.

I encourage you to look at the recommendations as a real opportunity for our sport to harness and align the wide range of interests involved in Skiing and Snowboarding in Australia. Our aim should be to ensure the best possible outcomes for the sport and the best use of all of our resources.

I look forward to further discussions regarding the best and most respectful way to implement the new direction for our sport.
