E-news Edition 48 - Olympic Nomination Update
Ski & Snowboard Australia nominates record Olympic numbers
Ski and Snowboard Australia will have its largest representation at
a Winter Olympic Games on record, with 25 athletes set to compete
in Torino 2006.
The SSA selection committee finalised its team nominations this
morning, naming Jacqui Cooper to the discretionary spot in the
women's aerials line-up, delivering a fourth Olympic Games
appearance to the 33-year-old Melbourne skier.
For the first time, SSA has been able to nominate more than one
athlete in each discipline - alpine skiing, cross country skiing,
freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
It has also filled for the first time the four quota places
available in ski and snowboard events under the International
Olympic Committee rules, nominating the maximum four athletes in
women's aerial skiing and men's moguls.
SSA Chief Executive Officer Michael Kennedy is delighted at the
steps forward the sport has taken in the past four years since the
Salt Lake Games, "We sent five athletes to Salt Lake 2002 who
had won World Cup medals, but this team contains nine athletes who
have made World Cup podiums.
In the four years prior to the 2002 Games, our athletes had won 35
World Cup medals, whereas in the past four years leading up to
Torino we have collected 54 medals."
"And most importantly, we will also have opportunities for success
across a broad range of disciplines and events. We have three cross
country skiers where we had none in Salt Lake, and we have nine
snowboarders in three different events which is a massive increase
on the one rider we had four years ago."
"We have no doubt that we are taking our best possible athletes and
the strongest team in our history to Torino."
