Edition 46  |21 December, 2005

Welcome to the 46th Edition of E News, the last edition for 2005.

As you may be aware from recent reports, our winter sport athletes are enjoying one of the most successful competition seasons on record, with multiple personal best results and firsts for Australian skiing and snowboarding.

Last weekend alone produced several “firsts” for our athletes including AJ Bear’s top 20 downhill result, Dale Begg-Smiths World Cup Mogul victory and Michael Robertson’s world cup bronze medal in the same event. Emmanuel Oppliger produced a top 6 World Cup result in Snowboard PGS and it appears as though SSA will nominate its biggest ever team to represent Australia at the Winter Olympics in Torino 2006.

SSA would like to congratulate all athletes who have met the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) selection standard and are now eligible for nomination to the 2006 Winter Olympic Team.

Selection for Torino will be made on an event by event basis. There are three performance standards under the AOC Selection Criteria, A, B and C. These correspond to achieving results respectively within the top 20%, 60% and 80% of the starting field in World Cup events.

For example, if there are 80 starters in an event, if an athlete finishes in place 48 or better then they are within 60%. For criteria B (60%) and C (80%), the athlete must achieve the standard in 50% of the races prior to the selection deadline on January 24. This is rounded up, so if three events are held then the athlete needs two results under the standard. Criteria C (80%) only applies if no athletes have qualified under A or B, and a maximum of one athlete per event may be selected

As of today, the following 18 athletes have satisfied the AOC selection criteria, and are now eligible for nomination by Ski & Snowboard Australia to the AOC. This is done in accordance with the published Nomination Criteria.
