Australian National Alpine Children's Squad 2007 -2008
Selection Criteria

There will be no official SSA NAC training camp operated for Australian Children for the 2007 – 2008 Northern Winter, but an Australian Children’s Squad will be named for recognition purposes.

The Australian Children’s Squad will comprise of approximately 18 children to be selected following the Australian Winter, having primary regard to performances in the National Children’s Series, with an overall discretion provided to the selectors to look beyond those results in exceptional cases having regard to injury, illness and other exceptional circumstances. The selectors will also consider exceptional results of children in the first year of Child II and their ranking in the National Children’s Series.

Relevant coaches are invited to discuss their recommendations for selection in the team with fellow coaches and to make recommendations to the SSA National Alpine Committee Chairman of Selectors promptly following the Australian Children’s Championships.

The objective of these criteria is to ensure that the most talented skiers are selected with the long term objective of some members of the team eventually progressing through the athlete pathway to the National Team. The team will be selected as:

Category Boys Girls Total
Child I 3 3 6
Child II 6 6 12
TOTAL 9 9 18

Individual athletes may seek to participate in international FIS children’s races such as the Trofeo Topolino event or the Whistler Cup.

At present, Australia has a quota of six spots in Child II and four spots in Child I categories. Generally, 50% of the spots are allocated to males and 50% to females for each age group. However, the SSA NAC has discretion to vary the selection between genders under the event rules if the applicable Race Organising Committee grants such discretion.

Selections for FIS children’s events will be accepted based on SSA points for the quota positions. In the event that the number of athletes seeking to participate in any such event exceeds the national quota, priority will be determined in accordance with the 01 October SSA points list as interpreted by the Chairman of Selectors.

Entry forms for FIS Children’s races will be available as soon as received by SSA from the applicable Race Organising Committees.
