The World Cup freestyle skiing circuit resumes in Mont
Tremblant this weekend, with the OWI likely to field a team
of four aerial skiers and five mogul skiers in the Canadian
event.
Australia goes into the aerials competition with three women
in the top six on the standings – Lydia Ierodiaconou in
fourth place, Alisa Camplin in fifth and Liz Gardner in
sixth.
All three women have completed two on-snow training camps in
Canada since the start of the northern hemisphere season,
and have made good progress in technique that augurs well
for the coming World Cups and the World Championships at the
end of the month.
Liz Gardner has completed her first double twisting double
back somersaults on snow, and will go to Mont Tremblant with
that trick ready to replace her lowest scoring jump, the lay
tuck, an improvement in degree of difficulty that could add
12 to 16 points to her score.
OWI Head Coach Todd Ossian also reports that Alisa is
jumping as well as she ever has, with her full double full
showing a significant points improvement on her previous
strong standard.
Lydia has completed her first full double full on snow
during the course of the camps and is also set to make a
significant increase in the degree of difficulty of her
repertoire with two triple twisting double somersaults.
However, with snow and weather conditions in Mont Tremblant
likely to be tough, all three athletes may opt to compete
lower DD jumps.
They will be joined in Mont Tremblant by Shannon Leotta, who
has been training in Park City, taking advantage of the 2002
Olympic jump site that will be used for the world
championships.
The fifth aerial skiing team member, Bree Munro, rejoined
the team for the second on-snow camp, and has been
progressing cautiously as she comes back from a neck injury
sustained at the second Mt Buller World Cup in September.
She will resume competition later in the month.
OWI mogul skiers Adrian Costa, Michael Robertson, Manuela
Berchtold, Maria Despas and Jane Sexton will also compete in
the Mont Tremblant World Cup.
