Aerial Skiing: Crunch Time for World Cup Title

Date: 27/02/03

Alisa Camplin goes into the last event of the 2003 season this weekend looking to add the World Cup title to her Olympic gold medal and world championship crown.

The battle for the World Cup title is a four way affair. Alisa, her OWI team-mate Lydia Ierodiaconou and Chinese skier Nina Li are all on 456 points, with former world champion Veronika Bauer of Canada 12 points behind on 444.

But the likely outcome is complicated by the International Ski Federation scoring system, which allows skiers to discard their three worst results from the nine event season.

This effectively means that Alisa and Bauer have the front running, with three wins each so far this season.

Only one thing is certain – if Alisa wins both events to be held in the Czech Republic resort of Spindleruv Mlyn, she will become the third Australian woman to take the World Cup title.

The 28-year-old proved once again that she could deal with the pressure of major events when she added the world championship title to her Olympic crown three weeks ago.

Only one other woman in the history of the sport – Uzbekistani skier Lina Cheryazova – has held all three major titles at the same time.

For her part, Lydia is determined to make the podium once again, the silver medal she collected in the last World Cup event in Steamboat going only a small way towards erasing the disappointment of her world championship experience.

Deer Valley aside, she has had a fantastic season, and has every chance on finishing in the top three.

World number eight Liz Gardner will be the third OWI athlete in the World Cup finals field, looking to secure a top ten end of season ranking.
