In a re-run of the Salt Lake Winter Olympics, Australian
skier Alisa Camplin has qualified second behind Swiss skier
Evelyne Leu for the final of the world freestyle aerials
championship.
As she did a year ago at the 2002 Games, Leu jumped to a
world record score in the qualifying round.
She posted 206.34 points to lead Alisa on 191.57, with
Chinese skier Nina Li in third on 190.81.
The Salt Lake gold medallist was delighted to be sitting in
second place after the elimination round, following an
injury scare two days earlier in training.
“I’m very happy things have worked out,” Alisa said.
“I was just hoping to get in two good jumps, and I’d prefer
to be in second or third after qualifying rather than
leading.”
“I’m taking it as a good omen that Evi is in first place and
I’m in second, like we were a year ago.”
Alisa recorded a personal best points score of 101.17 on her
opening jump, a triple twisting double somersault, then
backed off on the difficulty of her second jump with a
double twisting double.
Alisa's team-mates had mixed fortunes.
Fellow Victorian Liz Gardner made the 12-woman final with a
10th place in qualifying, scoring 86.71 points on her single
twisting double somersault, just 0.29 off a perfect score in
another personal best.
But Lydia Ierodiaconou, currently second on the World Cup
standings, failed to land either of her jumps cleanly and
finished in 15th place.
The fourth member of the team, New South Wales skier Shannon
Leotta landed one of the best jumps of her career as an
opener, but injured her knee in the process and took no
further part in the competition.
The final of the aerials will be held on Sunday, Australian
Eastern Summer Time, commencing at noon.
