Begg-Smith tops Ski and Snowboard awards
Freestyle skiers Dale Begg-Smith and Jacqui Cooper have
taken out the major Ski and Snowboard awards for the 2006/07
season.
Begg-Smith has been named snowsports athlete of the year for
the third consecutive time, while Cooper has received the
Outstanding Achievement of the Year award.
Coach of the year is the man who guided Begg-Smith to his
second straight World Cup title, Steve Desovich.
The junior snowsports athlete of the year is snowboard cross
rider Alex Pullin.
The awards were presented late last week at a Ski and
Snowboard Australia team reception.
Among the presenters were Chairman of the Australian Sports
Commission Peter Bartels and Chairman of the Olympic Winter
Institute Geoff Henke.
The individual discipline awards were:
Alpine: Demian Franzen
Cross country: Ben Sim
Freestyle: Dale Begg-Smith
Snowboard: Holly Crawford
Junior snowsports awards in each individual discipline
were:
Alpine: Katya Crema
Cross country: Aimee Watson
Freestyle: Ramone Cooper
Snowboard: Alex Pullin
Begg-Smith's 2006/07 season was certainly no let-down
following his Torino Olympic medal success.
The 21-year old collected six World Cup victories on his way
to his second straight World Cup title, then added the world
championship dual moguls crown and a single moguls silver
medal to his trophy cabinet.
In all, Dale collected seven victories and two other podiums
from the 12 events he contested during the season, a
remarkable record of consistency.
Cooper was also magnificent, becoming the most successful
woman in aerial skiing history, winning an unprecedented
fourth World Cup title, establishing a new record of 18
World Cup individual victories and breaking her own world
record points score. She added a bronze medal in the world
championships, eight years after winning her first world
crown.
